Suman Pawan Bodani has now become the first Hindu woman in Pakistan to be appointed a civil court judge, reports Press Trust of India (PTI).
Danyal Gilani, a bureaucrat with the Government of Pakistan, tweeted the development.
Suman, who hails from Qambar-Shahdadkot, completed her LLB course from Hyderabad and finished her masters in law from Karachi's Szabist University. She will now serve in her native district.
“Suman has opted for a challenging profession, but I am sure she will go places through hard work and honesty," Suman’s father said.
However, this isn’t the first instance of a Hindu participating in Pakistan’s judiciary. Justice Rana Bhagwandas was the first Hindu to be appointed a judge in the Islam-dominated country. In 2016, he also went on to serve as the acting chief justice of Pakistan’s Supreme Court.
Demographics
While Hinduism is still the second largest religion in Pakistan, it accounts for only two per cent of its population. In India, Islam is the second largest religion, making up 13.4 per cent of the population as per the 2011 census.
