While Elon Musk’s Tesla Motors might have chosen China to set up its first overseas manufacturing facility, the Indian government is still ready with open arms for the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, reports Bloomberg.

The California-based EV maker had held several rounds of discussions with the Government of India before zeroing in on China. Some of these discussions even made it to microblogging platform Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos that India is working on removing red tape and laying out a red carpet for investors across the globe. When asked whether Tesla’s decision to set up shop in China was India’s loss, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highwasys Nitin Gadkari said that it was a decision for the firm to make.

In June 2017, Musk stated that Tesla was in discussions with India for temporary relief on import penalties and restrictions till the time a local factory was up and running.Prior to that, he had flagged concerns about India’s local sourcing norms, which the government later clarified in a tweet.

Under Make In India, India aims to become a manufacturing hub by encouraging manufacturers to set up manufacturing units locally. Along with this, the current government is also looking at completely switching over to electric vehicles by 2030.
