To Avoid Repeat Of Last Year’s Law And Order Breakdown, Bengaluru To Deploy 15,000 Cops For New Year’s Eve

The information technology (IT) capital Bengaluru will turn into a virtual Fort Knox this New Year’s Eve with the Bengaluru City Police (BCP) deploying over 15,000 officers to prevent revelry from going awry, reports Mint.

The police are have decided notto let anything go amiss in order to prevent a rerun of last year’s incidents when allegations of mass molestation of women on Brigade Road and M G Road in the heart of the city broke out.

T Suneel Kumar,Commissioner of Police said,“Every year they make elaborate arrangements. Keeping the tradition, we have made elaborate arrangements this year also for which we will be deploying 15,000 policemen from the ranks of constable to commissioner".

Vehicular traffic will be restricted in core areas of the city's central business district (CBD). Around 70 platoons of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (KSRP) and City Armed Reserve (CAR) personnel, and about 1,000 civil defence personnel and home guards will be deployed.

Last year, allegations of mass molestation of women on Brigade Road broke out amidst the celebrations, leading to public outrage. Brgade Road witnesses heavy footfalls of around 40,000 people during the festive season.

Over 2,000 women oficers will be posted across the city with 500 of them at M G Road, Brigade Road, and Church Street.

Areas that normally witness heavy crowds during this year such as Indiranagar, Koramangala, Basavanagudi, Brigade Road, Church Street, and M G Road will have an additional 50 CCTV cameras and special lighting to prevent any untoward incident from taking place. Around 1,100 cameras are operational across the city with another 500 being added for the weekend. Drones will also be used to keep a watch on possible crime.

Entry to areas in the CBD may be restricted based on crowds, while bomb units and canine units have been sweeping the city in the last few days.

The Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) will also actively monitor traffic and penalise drunken drivers.
