United States (US) are among the very few companies across the world to defy China’s demand that Taiwan be referred to as being part of China. Adding to the fracas United Airlines made a small concession to recognize Taiwan which did embarrass China reports Business Insider .
China had earlier forced dozens of airlines to remove their references to Taiwan as sovereign nation. The United Airlines had complied initially, but recently gave a concession to recognise Taiwan.
The US airlines were taking a cue from their government and referring to the issue as something that ought to be settled between the US and Chinese governments. Backing their airlines US senators have asked the companies to stand up to what they described as ‘Chinese bullying’ on the issue. The White House has also referred to China’s demand as ‘Orwellian nonsense’.
The airlines allowed customers to list their location as one that uses Taiwaneese currency. The airline recently enabled a functionality that allowed customers to list their location as one that uses the Taiwanese currency, the New Taiwan Dollar.
