In response to the escalating turmoil in Myanmar, a significant number of over 2,200 individuals, primarily comprising women and children, have sought refuge in Manipur's bordering Kamjong district.
This influx has prompted local authorities to extend support, including the provision of essential items such as food and household supplies.
A senior official from Kamjong district stated, "As of 10 December, about 2,260 refugees have sought shelter in Kamjong, with biometrics of approximately 1,778 individuals already captured."
As reported by Hindustan Times, efforts to assist the affected refugees have been ongoing since last month in key areas such as Phaikoh, H Thana/Sangkalok, K Ashang Khullen, Wanglee, and Namlee villages, as confirmed by officials.
While Manipur shares a 398-km-long international border with Myanmar across Churachandpur, Chandel, Kamjong, Tengnoupal, and Ukhrul districts, Kamjong alone accounts for 109 km of this border.
However, the absence of a proper border fence in Kamjong poses a significant challenge for the district administration in preventing illegal infiltration.
To address this, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Manipur police, are actively managing the border region to curb cross-border movements.
Earlier, In July of this year, around 718 Myanmar nationals, including 209 males, 208 females, and 301 children, were detected in Manipur's border districts.
