In a historic move, the Delhi Police is set to feature an all-women contingent marching down the Kartavya Path during the Republic Day parade on 26 January.
This initiative aims to underscore gender equality and women empowerment, with 80 per cent of the participants hailing from the northeastern states.
As reported by Deccan Herald, Shweta K Sugathan, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, will lead the marching contingent of 194 female head constables.
Speaking about the event, Special Commissioner of Police (Armed Police) Robin Hibu, highlighted that all the members of the contingent will take part in the parade for the first time this year and are 'very excited'.
Adding to the achievements, this year's Republic Day parade will witness another milestone as the women's pipe band, led by constable Ruyangunuo Kense, will play the 'Delhi Police Song.'
This move follows the Defence Ministry’s directive last year to incorporate women participants in contingents, bands, and tableaux during the Republic Day celebrations.
The Delhi Police‘s marching contingent, with a remarkable history of participating in every Republic Day parade since 1950, is expected to be a captivating centerpiece during this year's event.
The force has been awarded the title of the best marching contingent 15 times, with its motto echoing the principles of 'Shanti, Seva aur Nyaya' — 'Peace, Service, and Justice.'
