Karnataka: Minority Group Calls For Postponement Of Anjuman-e-Islam Elections Until Release Of Old Hubballi Riot Accused

In a recent development, the Dharwad Zilla Durbala Alpasankyatara Abhivrudhi Seva Sangha has called for the postponement of elections by the Anjuman-e-Islam organization until individuals detained in connection with the Old Hubballi riots are granted bail.
Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday (30 January), Sangha president IM Torgal expressed concerns about the morale of the Muslim community following the incidents in Old Hubballi.
Highlighting the dissension and the repercussions faced by families due to the actions of certain youths, Torgal urged Anjuman-e-Islam to refrain from conducting elections until all detainees are released on bail, reported TOI.
He specifically demanded the immediate resignation of Anjuman-e-Islam's current president, Yusuf Savanur, and emphasised the need for fair and impartial elections if they were to proceed.

The Old Hubballi incident, which occurred on 16 April 2022, saw violence erupt after an Islamist mob besieged the Old Hubli police station, alleging inaction against a Hindu individual accused of sharing objectionable content on WhatsApp.
The violence resulted in Stone-pelting , targeting the police station, a Hanuman temple, and a hospital.
In response to the situation, Anjuman-e-Islam had announced its intention to legally represent those arrested for their involvement in the violence and has been providing legal assistance to the 154 individuals detained.
Police investigations have revealed connections between the rioting mob and the Raza Academy, a radical Islamist organization known for its involvement in the 2012 Azad Maidan riots in Mumbai.
In December of the previous year, 35 accused individuals in the Hubballi riots case were granted bail.
