Tamil Nadu: DMDK Unites Behind Premalatha Vijayakant, Elects Her As General Secretary In Unanimous Decision
Premlatha Vijaykant has been unanimously elected as DMDK's General Secretary.
In a unanimous decision during the 18th executive and general council meeting on 14 December, 2023, the Desiya Murpokku Dravidar Kazhagam (DMDK) elected Premalatha Vijayakant, the party's treasurer, as its general secretary as reported by The Hindu.
The meeting, chaired by DMDK Founder Vijayakant, who recently recovered from a hospital stay, took place at a private hall in Thiruverkadu, Tamil Nadu.
Premalatha had assumed the role of the party's treasurer in October 2018, given the health challenges faced by DMDK founder Vijayakant.
The council passed several resolutions during the meeting, granting full authority to Vijayakant to decide on alliances for the upcoming Lok Sabha election.
Another resolution called for the state government to provide a monthly cash aid of Rs 1,000 to all women heads.
Additional resolutions included a call for police action against those spreading rumours about Vijayakant's health, addressing price hikes implemented by the DMK government, handling issues related to land acquisition for the Parandur airport, addressing concerns of fishermen, and advocating for a government-funded insurance scheme for individuals below the poverty line during natural disasters.
The resolutions also emphasised the need for better disaster management planning.
