Women Commission Chief Takes Up Disturbing Case Of Attack On Elderly Woman Over Political Differences In Bengal

The National Commission for Women has written to chief election commissioner regarding the case
Shova Majumdar, mother of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopal Majumdar, was allegedly attacked by workers belonging to rival All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) party on 27 February.
Speaking to news agency ANI, Shova said that a group of TMC workers barged into her house around 4.30 in the morning. They pushed her to the ground and hit her, including on the face. The attackers also threatened her to keep her mouth shut and warned her against identifying them to the cops, she said.
Women commission chief Rekha Sharma took cognizance of a tweet about the attack posted by a Swarajya journalist and said that she was taking the case up. “Sad and disturbing,” Sharma said about the attack.
As per reports the attack happened in Ward 7 of North Dum Dum area on Friday (2 February).
The BJP leader Gopal has alleged that the thugs broke their house door with sticks and yelled at him for being with the BJP. The then allegedly started beating him up and also hit him at the back of his head with a revolver.
The picture of brutal wounds suffered by Shova on her face was widely shared by shocked social media users.
The TMC dispensation meanwhile has denied its involvement in the attack and called it a family dispute.
The commission chief wrote to chief election commissioner Sunil Arora on 3 March.
