Uttar Pradesh Elections 2022
Voting for the third phase of assembly elections is underway in Uttar Pradesh. Today, 59 constituencies, across 16 districts are holding elections. These 16 districts are in the Bundelkhand and central part of the State.
The main challenger to the incumbent BJP in the region is the the Samajwadi Party. The BSP and the Congress are fighting it alone this time.
In 2012, the BJP won only eight of the 59 constituencies polling today. The SP won 37; the BSP, 10; the Congress, three; and one seat was picked up by Others.
The 2014 Lok Sabha elections saw a stark reversal and the BJP led in 46 of the 59 constituencies going to polls today and the SP in 12. The Congress led in one and the BSP in none.
In the 2017 assembly elections, the BJP then picked up 49 of these 59; the SP, eight and one each was won by the BSP and the Congress.
This third phase of the UP polls is seeing districts like Mainpuri, Etah, Etawah and Kannauj going to polls. Traditionally, these areas have been strongholds of the Samajwadi but as the numbers above show, have been giving overwhelming support to the BJP since 2014.
Uttar Pradesh will see election in seven phases with the last date of polling on 7 March and counting of votes on 10 March.
The next round of polling in the State will be on 20 February.
