Supreme Court Refuses To Entertain Contempt Plea Against Udhayanidhi Stalin For His Remarks Calling For Eradication Of Sanatana Dharma
Supreme Court heard a plea seeking contempt action against Udhayanidhi Stalin
A Supreme Court bench of Justices Sanjiv Khanna and SVN Bhatti today (29 November) said that it would not entertain a plea seeking contempt action against Udhayanidhi Stalin for his remarks calling for the eradication of Sanatana Dharma.
According to a report by news agency IANS, the bench said, “If we start entertaining contempt, we will be flooded with it. We will not go into individual cases.”
The remarks were made by the bench while hearing a batch of pleas regarding hate speech.
Further, it stated, “We cannot deal with individual aspects. What we will do is to put an administration mechanism in place and if there is any breach, then you will have to go to the respective High Court."
In September, a Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Aniruddha Bose and Justice Bela M Trivedi issued notice after hearing a plea seeking the registration of an FIR against Udhayanidhi.
The Madras High Court recently completed hearing quo warranto writ petitions filed by three Hindu Munnani office-bearers in their personal capacity, asking the Court to seek an explanation from Udhayanidhi, HRCE Minister P Sekar Babu and DMK MP A Raja as to how were they continuing in public office after having made remarks calling for the eradication of Sanatana Dharma or participating in such events.
