It seems that NDA has a clear majority over others in terms of running India’s cleanest cities.

Yesterday, the Urban Development ministry released a ranking of clean cities in the country based on waste management, sanitation, integrated solid waste management and others. The new survey, unlike the previous one, was restricted to 73 cities having a population of more than 10 lakh so that there is no unfair competition to smaller cities.

We look at which part of India has cleaner cities , its local government and the party running the state government in which these cities are located.

1. The western part of India dominates the list

Geographically, among the top 20 cleanest cities, no points for guessing, the north and east lags behind, while the west and south have cleaner cities.

2. Majority of the state governments are governed by the NDA parties

Even though majority states are not ruled by the NDA, among the ruling party of states having cleanest cities they are ahead. Many would say, it takes more than a party to make a city clean, but the effect of the state government is for sure important.

3. Even municipal organisations of these cities are run by NDA parties

The city corporations, much maligned and considered to be the dens of corruption and petty politics, are the only local level government agencies which can lead the “Swacch Bharat Abhiyaan.” The more efficient ones certainly deserve to be awarded.

It seems that NDA has a clear majority over others in terms of running India’s cleanest cities. In the spirit of healthy competition and the aspiration of a ‘Swacch Bharat’ let’s hope other parties also take up the task seriously.
