The Ministry of Defence on Saturday (30 April) said that it has procured items worth rover Rs 15,000 crore through the Government E-Marketplace (GeM) portal in the financial year 2021-22.
"Procurement orders by Ministry of Defence through Government e-Market (GeM) portal have reached an all-time high of Rs 15,047.98 crore for Financial Year 2021-22," the Defence Ministry said in a release.
It is a jump of more than 250 percent over the last financial year, the ministry said.
"In a short span since its inception, the MoD has embraced the digital drive and embarked on this path with absolute resoluteness," it said.
The ministry said that it is committed to contribute significantly to the government's vision of promoting digitisation and transparency in consonance with Digital India.
The GeM, launched in August 2016, is a one stop portal to facilitate online procurement of common use Goods & Services required by various government ministries and departments, Public Sector Undertakings and other apex autonomous bodies of the Central Government.
GeM is hosted by the Directorate General of Supplies and Disposals (DGS&D) under Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It aims to enhance transparency, efficiency and speed in public procurement. It provides the tools of e-bidding, reverse e-auction and demand aggregation to facilitate the government users achieve the best value for their money.
