The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Indian Navy successfully have carried out the country's first-ever sea-based trial of an endo-atmospheric interceptor missile.
The test was conducted off the coast of Odisha in the Bay of Bengal earlier today (21 April 2023), the Defence Ministry has said.
The primary objective of the trial, it added in a statement, was to engage and neutralize a hostile ballistic missile threat.
With this successful test, India joins the league of nations that possess naval Ballistic Missile Defence capabilities, which is a major milestone.
"Prior to this, DRDO has successfully demonstrated land-based BMD system with capability to neutralize ballistic missile threats, emerging from adversaries," the statement put out by the ministry read.
According to DRDO Chairman, Dr. Samir V Kamat, the nation has accomplished self-reliance in the development of advanced network-centric anti-ballistic missile systems.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
