Over 3,000 Defence Items Previously Imported Now Made In India: Rajnath Singh

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday (30 August) highlighted the government’s push for defence self-reliance, saying that out of the 5,500 items in the positive Indigenisation Lists, more than 3,000 items are already being produced in India.

“So far, we have issued several Positive Indigenisation Lists to promote self-reliance in the defence sector. Under these lists, it has been decided that more than 5,500 such items will no longer be imported but will instead be manufactured within India, within a stipulated timeframe," Singh said at the NDTV Defence Summit.

“You will be glad to know that more than 3,000 items, which were earlier imported, are now being produced indigenously in India," he added.

He further noted the that India has reached a milestone in shipbuilding, with frontline warships now being constructed on Indian soil.

"In the construction of warships too, we have now become completely self-reliant. I am pleased to say that all our warships are now being built in our country, on our own soil," Singh said.

He said that the defence sector today has evolved into an efficient ecosystem encompassing innovation, technology, manufacturing, and economic security.

He added that this approach is driving India towards self-reliance and positioning it as a decisive power on the global stage.

Singh said that the defense sector today was not only the foundation of national security, but had also become a pillar that strengthened the country's economy and secured its future.

He explained that it was not just about protecting people, protecting land, or defending borders, but was becoming a sector responsible for the protection and security of the entire economy.
