The Maharashtra government will hold the bhoomi poojan for the new Bombay High Court complex at Bandra East on 5 November, marking a major milestone in the state’s long-pending plan to address the severe space crunch at the 146-year-old Fort building, the Hindustan Times reported.

The event, coinciding with Guru Nanak Jayanti, will be attended by Chief Justice of India Bhushan Gavai, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Ajit Pawar.

The Public Works Department (PWD) on Friday (31 October) issued the tender notice for the project, which will now cost Rs 4,217 crore, an increase from the earlier estimate of Rs 3,750 crore.

Spread across 30 acres, the new complex will feature over 60 lakh sq ft of built-up area, designed by architect Hafeez Contractor and approved by the High Court’s steering committee.

The modern judicial hub will house 75 courtrooms, each with dedicated waiting areas to prevent overcrowding.

The main building will have a semi-circular façade with a 50-metre Ashoka pillar and a central dome rising to 70 metres.

Separate entrances will be provided for judges, advocates, litigants, and visitors.

The move aims to replace the historic but congested Gothic-style Fort building, constructed in 1878 for just 15 judges and seven courts.

Today, it accommodates 29 courts and 35 judges, while the High Court’s sanctioned strength has grown to 94.

The Bandra East site, part of a 90-acre government colony near Bandra-Kurla Complex, was chosen for its accessibility via the Western Express Highway, Sea Link, and upcoming Coastal Road.

The government has already cleared 68 old structures and plans to redevelop the remaining land with residential towers for government employees.
