Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced that India’s fighter aircraft must be powered by an indigenous jet engine, hinting that the government is preparing to make an announcement on the matter.
Speaking from the Red Fort on Independence Day, he stressed that self-reliance in critical defence technologies was essential for national security.
The statement comes amid delays in the delivery of GE engines for the Tejas Mk1A fighter jets. These holdups have already slowed production and deployment schedules.
Tensions in India–US relations have added to concerns that engine supplies could face further disruption. Any such delay would push back the induction of urgently needed fighters into the IAF.
