Alstom Transport India has officially started production of metro trains for Bhopal and Indore Metro at its manufacturing facility in Savli, Gujarat.

The commencement of rolling stock manufacturing was virtually inaugurated by Bhupendra Singh who is the Minister of urban development in the state.

Earlier, in July 2022, the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) had awarded a combined contract to Alstom to design, build and deliver 52 standard gauge Movia metro passenger trainsets of 3-car configuration each for Bhopal and Indore metro projects.

The French mobility company will supply 27 trainsets for Bhopal metro and 25 trainsets for Indore.

Valued at €387 million (over Rs 3,200 crore), the order includes installation of latest generation of Communications Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system as well as train control and telecommunication systems; each with seven years of comprehensive maintenance.

Strong Order Portfolio

This is the second such combined order in India for Alstom, after the Agra-Kanpur metro projects.

The French major is responsible for the delivery of 201 standard gauge metro cars for Agra & Kanpur Metro Project with a provision for supply of an additional 51 metro cars.

Apart from this, Alstom is currently manufacturing metro trains for Mumbai Metro Line 3, and modern trainsets for India's first semi high-speed Delhi-Meerut RRTS project.

Movia Trainset

According to the company's statement, the Movia metro family offers latest technology combined with proven and reliable components.

Built with light but strong stainless steel car bodies, the air-conditioned cars are powered with modern energy efficient propulsion systems with regenerative braking, making them a sustainable alternative to other modes of transport, thus reducing energy consumption.

These ultramodern, light-weight trains will operate at a top speed of 80 kmph, across the 31 km line in Bhopal with 30 stations and the 31.5 km line in Indore with 29 stations.

Movia metros have been delivered to various cities around the world, including Delhi, London, Stockholm, and Singapore.
