Authorities in Ahmedabad are exploring options to decongest the single entry–exit route at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International (SVPI) Airport, according to a Times of India report.
At a recent meeting, officials from the airport authority, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), and other agencies discussed two proposals, developing new approach roads or constructing an elevated corridor, similar to the one near Delhi Airport.
The existing road at Airport Circle handles all inbound and outbound traffic, resulting in heavy congestion throughout the day.
One of the ideas under review involves an elevated route from Shahibaug–Sadar Bazaar directly into the airport, while another proposes a corridor linking the airport with Indira Bridge.
The plan aims to separate entry and exit points for smoother vehicle movement.
The discussion coincides with preparations for upcoming international events, as Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar strengthen their bid to host the 2036 Olympics.
The Sardar Patel Sports Enclave, being developed on around 650 acres near the Narendra Modi Stadium in Motera at a cost of Rs 5,050 crore, is expected to be completed by December 2028. Once operational, it is likely to increase traffic volumes around the airport.
Earlier, AMC had proposed a tunnel project under the Army Cantonment’s firing range to connect Airport Circle with the Sabarmati Riverfront.
However, the plan has been pending for two years due to lack of clearance from the Army.
Officials are now considering opening the same stretch of road with high boundary walls for security, instead of pursuing the tunnel.
In parallel, work under Phase-2 of the Sabarmati Riverfront project is progressing, including construction of a 24 metre wide road on the eastern bank to link with Airport Circle.
With these developments, the civic body aims to improve access between the Riverfront, the Sports Enclave, and the airport.
