The largest metro station in Bengaluru, located at Jayadeva junction, is expected to partially open by the end of 2023.
This station will be a part of both the Yellow Line, running from RV Road to Bommasandra, and the Pink Line, connecting Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara. It will have the capacity to accommodate 25,000 passengers during peak hours.
According to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) MD Anjum Parwez, the Jayadeva Metro Station is part of the Phase II expansion plan for Namma Metro. The line from RV Road to Bommasandra, which includes the Jayadeva station among its 16 stops along the 19-km route, is set to open by the end of this year.
The BMRCL officials have reported that approximately 90 per cent of the station's construction has been completed, with a total built-up area of 19,826 sqm.
After facing several delays, BMRCL has set a target to open the Yellow Line in 2023, while the Pink Line is expected to be operational by March 2025.
The Yellow Line includes a double-decker flyover, with one level for road traffic and another for metro trains. This design allows people coming from the Ragigudda side to directly access Silk Board without stopping at any signals.
According to Parwez, the Jayadeva interchange station will be fully operational once the Pink Line from Kalena Agrahara to Nagawara starts running commercially. This will further facilitate uninterrupted travel for commuters.
After the Majestic interchange station, Jayadeva is expected to have the highest footfall when it becomes fully operational. The Majestic station currently serves over one lakh passengers per day, and sometimes the number exceeds 1.2 lakh.
It is anticipated that the Jayadeva station, connecting two major metro lines, will attract around 80,000 to 90,000 passengers once both the Yellow and Pink lines are open to the public, reports Times Of India.
There are a total of three interchange stations along the Yellow Line. These stations provide convenient transfer options for passengers travelling between different metro lines.
When the Yellow Line opens, Bengaluru will have three interchange metro stations. RV Road Station will be the third interchange station, connecting the Yellow Line to the Green Line. BMRCL estimates that this new line will increase metro ridership by 2 lakh.
The construction of the Jayadeva interchange station presented numerous challenges for BMRCL. To minimise land acquisition, the agency decided to demolish a 10-year-old flyover and build the multi-level station in its place. After years of finalising the design, the elevated line now extends towards Silk Board.
In 2020, the flyover was successfully demolished despite the significant construction work and traffic in the area. To facilitate construction, precast double T-girders were used for the first time in Namma Metro.
Additionally, steel composite girders were employed to cross the underpass. The upper corridor of the double-decker flyover will rise 34m above the underpass.
