Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail Corridor Marks First Mountain Tunnel Breakthrough In A Short Span Of 10 Months

The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) today marked a milestone in its Mumbai -Ahmedabad high-speed railway (HSR) project with the breakthrough of the first mountain tunnel.

Located at around 1km away from Zaroli Village of Umbergaon Taluka in Valsad district of Gujarat, it is the first mountain tunnel to achieve breakthrough and has been completed in a short span of 10 months.

The tunnel structure comprises of tunnel, tunnel portal and other connecting structures like tunnel entrance hood.

The mountain tunnel has been constructed under the C4 package of the project which involves design and construction of 237 km length of viaduct between Vapi and Vadodara in the state of Gujarat including four stations namely Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch and Surat Depot.

The mountain tunnel spans a length of 350 m. It has a distinctive single-tube horseshoe shape with a diameter of 12.6 m and height of 10.25 m. It has been designed to accommodate two tracks, ensuring seamless and efficient travel within the high-speed rail corridor.

The tunnel is being constructed by New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). MAHSR corridor will have seven mountain tunnels, all of which will be constructed using the NATM.
