The Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is preparing to acquire land along Avinashi Road and the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road starting March 2025 as part of its ambitious metro rail project.
M.A. Siddique, Managing Director of CMRL, expressed optimism about securing Union government approval for the metro projects in Coimbatore and Madurai in the near future.
“We will soon issue a notification for land acquisition. Once the Union government approves the project, we will begin the acquisition process. The metro rail project will be completed within three years from the commencement date,” said Siddique.
Project Details
The Coimbatore metro train will initially feature three coaches, designed to accommodate over 700 passengers at a time. This setup is expected to meet demand for the next 40 to 50 years. In the first phase, the project will include two major corridors:
Corridor I: Ukkadam bus stand to Neelambur integrated station via the airport, spanning 20.4 kilometers.
Corridor II: Coimbatore railway junction to Valiyampalayam Pirivu, covering 14.4 kilometers.
In total, the first phase will see 34.8 kilometers of metro tracks constructed. Siddique stated that 10 hectares of land would need to be acquired for these corridors, with the acquisition process expected to take up to two years. Notifications to landowners will be issued soon.
The metro will primarily operate on an elevated corridor to minimize land acquisition. On Avinashi Road, pillars will be constructed along the edges of the service road, spaced 30 meters apart, from Anna Statue to Neelambur.
The metro will make a U-turn at Neelambur to head toward the airport, with plans to eventually extend Corridor I to the L&T bypass road. Future phases will include metro coverage on Mettupalayam Road and Trichy Road, reports The New Indian Express.
Integration and Infrastructure
The project aims to integrate public transport systems, including bus stands, railway stations, and the airport, in collaboration with local authorities and the National Highways (NH) department. At Saravanampatti, where the NH plans to build a flyover, the metro will operate on level II, above the flyover. Elsewhere along the Coimbatore-Sathyamangalam Road, metro pillars will be constructed at the center of the roadway.
Each metro station will be equipped with elevators and escalators for accessibility.
Siddique assured that the Coimbatore metro rail project would progress faster than the Madurai metro project. He also hinted at adjustments to the detailed project report to ensure maximum benefits for residents.
