Etihad Rail, the developer and operator of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) National Rail Network, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with RITES formerly known as Rail India Technical and Economic Service Limited, an Indian transport infrastructure consultancy, to explore potential collaborations in railway development and related services in the UAE and neighboring regions.

The MoU was signed on Wednesday (9 October) by Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, and Rahul Mithal, Chairman and Managing Director of RITES, according to an official press release.

The partnership aims to capitalise on the strengths of both organizations to explore opportunities in areas such as rolling stock supply, leasing, repair, consulting, and project management.

“This strategic collaboration with Etihad Rail underscores our commitment to operational excellence and innovation while supporting sustainable infrastructure development,” said Rahul Mithal. “It is a significant step in our ‘RITES Videsh’ initiative, which focuses on expanding our global services. Together, we aim to improve connectivity and set new benchmarks in the rail industry,” reports Money Control.

The agreement also includes capacity analysis of rail corridors in the UAE and nearby regions, with the goal of improving trade routes, streamlining logistics, and increasing efficiency. Both parties will explore advanced IT solutions for train operations, passenger management, and maintenance procedures, all while emphasizing innovation and cutting-edge technology.

Shadi Malak, CEO of Etihad Rail, highlighted the importance of the partnership in modernizing the UAE's rail network. “This strategic partnership with RITES marks a major milestone in enhancing connectivity and transforming transportation in the UAE,” said Malak. “By leveraging our combined expertise, we will create forward-thinking, innovative solutions that benefit both freight and future passenger services, contributing to the overall infrastructure and operational excellence of the region.”

UAE Railway Network links the principal centres of trade, industry, manufacturing, production, logistics, population and all the major import and export points of the United Arab Emirates as well as form an integral part of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) railway network.
