Gurugram Metro Rail Limited (GMRL), overseeing the Millennium City Centre to Cyber City corridor, is set to award contracts for a detailed design consultant (DDC) and a general consultant (GC) by the end of June.

“We want the work on Gurugram metro to start at the earliest, for which, these tenders will be awarded next month," Chander Shekhar Khare, the recently appointed managing director of GMRL said after visiting project site on Friday.

The 28.5-kilometre Gurugram Metro project will extend the metro line from HUDA City Centre (now Millennium City Centre) to Cyber City via Old Gurugram. Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone for this project on 16 February this year.

Estimated to cost Rs 5,452.72 crore, the elevated metro project will form a ring line through Gurugram and Old Gurugram with a total of 27 stations. It will also include a 1.85-km spur from Basai Village to Dwarka Expressway.

The main corridor will stretch from Millennium City Centre to Cyber City (26.65 kilometres), connecting new Gurugram areas (HUDA City Centre, Cyber Park, Hero Honda Chowk) with older parts (Sector 10, Ashok Vihar, Palam Vihar), spurring economic activity.

It will also offer an interchange with the Delhi Metro’s Yellow Line at Millennium City Centre, providing direct connectivity between much of Gurugram and Delhi, and track integration with Rapid Metro at Belvedere Towers and Moulsari Avenue stations.

On 25 January this year, the Haryana government approved the formation of Gurugram Metro Rail Ltd, a joint venture between the Haryana government and the government of India, to execute the metro extension project.

Currently, the geotechnical survey of the project is being conducted by the consultant hired by GMRL.

“The geotechnical work awarded for the first 13 km is already 70 per cent complete and will be over by end of next month. Several such developments are taking place simultaneously and our consultants will be hired soon to take the project forward,” Khare said.
