In a significant move to enhance regional connectivity and promote tourism, the government of India announced plans to establish 18 water aerodromes across key locations, including Andaman and Nicobar, Lakshadweep, Goa, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh.

Waterdromes support amphibious aircraft that can operate on both land and water. This versatility allows seaplanes to serve a dual purpose, increasing operational flexibility and enabling flights to a wider variety of destinations, further improving connectivity.

Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu revealed the ambitious project, emphasising the potential of seaplane services to transform tourism in these regions.

To facilitate the expansion of seaplane operations, the government has simplified regulations, allowing non-scheduled entities to operate seaplane services. Currently, seaplane activities are limited to Andaman & Nicobar and Gujarat, but the new regulatory framework aims to expand them significantly.

The government has also introduced a streamlined certification process and revised regulations after extensive consultations with industry stakeholders. Under the updated Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) norms, waterdrome licences will no longer be required, and compliance requirements have been eased.

Waterdromes, which serve as landing and takeoff points for seaplanes, are a key infrastructure component for these operations. Civil Aviation Secretary Vumlunmang Vualnam stated that the civil aviation requirements for seaplanes have been simplified, and state governments have been encouraged to identify suitable water bodies for these services.

Additionally, new commercial pilot licence holders will now be able to obtain seaplane ratings directly, allowing them to fly seaplanes, which are amphibious aircraft capable of operating on both land and water, reports Deccan Herald.

Waterdromes play a pivotal role in enhancing regional connectivity, boosting tourism, and supporting economic growth, especially in regions with difficult terrain or limited infrastructure.
