The Indian Railways has finished its transition from diesel to fulfill its electricity requirements inside the coaches.

This transformation is set to result in the national transporter saving over Rs 3800 crore annually.

Now, the electricity that is transmitted through the overhead cables will be used for light and air-conditioning purposes inside the trains.

“The Indian Railways has converted 1586 trains (992 rakes) from End On Generation (EOG) to Head On Generation (HOG),” senior government official GK Bansal was quoted by the Economic Times (ET).

He added, “This move will result in a reduction of CO2 emissions to the tune of nearly 5.8 lakh tonnes per year, besides saving Rs 3854 crores per annum in terms of saving of costly imported diesel.”

Bansal explained that this development has become further important due to the rising oil prices in the backdrop of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

This transition was kicked off in 2018 and the implementation was completed in February 2022.

Bansal added that the total cost of the HOG system was only Rs 60 crore and it is entirely indigenous.
