Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday (4 September) inaugurated TDK’s ATL plant in Sohna, calling it a “very important milestone” in India’s journey towards self-reliance in electronics manufacturing.
“This is indeed a very important milestone for us. We are fulfilling PM's dream of having Aatmanirbhar Bharat in electronics manufacturing step-by-step,” Vaishnaw said, highlighting that India has begun producing almost every critical component used in electronics.
The new plant will manufacture lithium-ion batteries for mobile phones, laptops, wearables and hearables such as watches, earbuds and AirPods.
According to the minister, the facility will produce around 200 million battery packs every year.
“Our requirement for the country in the mobile phone sector is about 50 crore cellpacks annually. So that means about 40 per cent of the capacity will be met by this factory,” he said.
The plant also has “huge expansion scope,” he added.

Vaishnaw credited the Haryana government for its support in setting up the unit under the Centre’s Electronics Manufacturing Cluster (EMC) scheme.
The project, he said, reflects the government’s larger push to localise the entire electronics value chain, from camera modules and PCB assembly to semiconductors and batteries.
The facility is expected to generate direct employment for nearly 5,000 people, with training already underway at the plant.
“This kind of advanced technology coming to India is a major milestone for us,” Vaishnaw said.
Recently, India unveiled its first domestically developed semiconductor chip.
With lithium-ion cell manufacturing now added to the list, the government projects that nearly all major components of consumer electronics will be made in India within the next few years.
TDK is iPhone maker Apple's vendor for lithium-ion batteries.
ATL purchased 180 acres of land for a price of Rs 550 crore in Industrial Model Township (IMT) Sohna, close to the city of Gurugram, last month.
Also, the land (plant) is just 46.6 kilometres away from the international airport in New Delhi.
