Ridership on the Nagpur Metro crossed the one lakh mark on its two lines on the second day of their inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the project operator said on Tuesday.
Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (Maha Metro) operates passenger services of the mass rapid transport system.
Maha Metro, in a press release, said it has crossed a milestone as ridership on Monday (12 december), the second day after inauguration of the two lines, was 1,09,754.
The passenger services on the two remaining sections of Prajapati Nagar-Sitabuldi Interchange and Automotive Square-Kasturchand Park corridors were inaugurated by Prime Minister Modi in the morning on 11 December.
Thereafter passenger services on the two lines got operational at 12 noon.
Maha Metro operates passenger services from 6 am to 10 pm and they would be increased as per commuters’ demand, said an offcial release.
Given the current trend, the Maha Metro ridership is expected to touch the 1.5 lakh mark in the coming days.
Nagpur metro phase-1
The Phase-1 of Nagpur Metro comprises a 39-km-long elevated stretch, with 38 stations and two depots.
The entire stretch has been divided into two corridors: North-South (Line-1) and East-West (Line-2).
The 19.6-km-long North-South corridor with 18 stops will operate between Khapri and Automotive Square.
The East-West corridor with a length of 18.5 km connects Prajapati Nagar on the eastern part of the city with Lokmanya Nagar in the western part of the city and has 20 stops.
The PM on sunday (11 december) dedicated metro routes from Kasturchand Park to Automotive Square (Line-1) and Jhansi Rani Square to Prajapati Nagar (Line-2), to the people of Nagpur.
Until now, the metro has been operational between Khapri and Kasturchand Park on Line-1 and Lokmanya Nagar and Sitabuldi Interchange on Line-2.
The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone of Nagpur Metro Phase- II, which will be developed at a cost of more than Rs 6,700 crore.
The project has been implemented by the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MAHA-METRO), which is a 50:50 jointly owned company of Government of India and Government of Maharashtra.
