The National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL) has announced that the second 100-metre span of a 2 x 100 m long steel bridge was successfully launched over National Highway 48 (NH-48) near Nadiad, Gujarat.
This is the ninth steel bridge completed for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train project.
The bridge comprises two spans of 100 metres each and weighs about 2,884 metric tons. It stands 14.6 metres tall and 14.3 metres wide, with a design life of 100 years.
Fabricated at Salasar near Hapur in Uttar Pradesh, the steel segments were transported and assembled at site before installation.
NH-48 is one of India’s busiest highways with six lanes, three on each side, connecting Delhi, Mumbai, and Chennai.
The bridge span was launched across the highway by sliding it for 100 metres in a carefully planned operation to ensure smooth traffic movement and minimise disruption to commuters.
The assembly was carried out on trestles placed 14.9 metres above the ground, and the span was moved into place with two semi-automatic jacks capable of lifting 250 tons each.
The 200-metre long steel bridge has been built with over 1,14,000 Tor-Shear Type High Strength bolts, C5 protective painting, and elastomeric bearings.
With this, Gujarat now has nine completed steel bridges, including those across highways, railways, expressways, and freight corridors.
In all, 28 steel bridges are planned along the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Bullet Train corridor.
Out of these, 11 will be located in Maharashtra and 17 in Gujarat.
