  • The Rs 1,800 crore re-development project would be carried out without altering the iconic UNESCO listed heritage property.
  • One of the main objectives of this upgrade is to provide commuters with a world-class travel experience.
  • Larsen and Toubro (L&T), Afcons Infrastructure, Ahluwalia Contracts and Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC) submitted bids for the Rs 1,800 crore Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminal (CSMT) re-development project.

With this, bids have been submitted for all three major stations for which the Cabinet clearances were obtained last year.

While two real estate companies submitted bids for New Delhi, three players came forward for Ahmedabad and four construction giants entered the race for Mumbai station.

The Rail Land Development Authority had invited bids for the re-development of iconic Mumbai station, which is also a UNESCO listed world heritage site, after getting all necessary clearances from the heritage committee.

The Rs 1,800 crore re-development project would be carried out without altering the heritage property. Mumbai station will be redeveloped using the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) model.

Though Tata Projects, JK Infra, ITD Cementation, Dineshchandra R Agrawal Infracon Pvt. Ltd., Creative Group LLP and Assystem Stup were among nine real estate giants who had shown interest in the re-development of the CSMT project, only four bids were found when opened on Tuesday (14 March).

The re-development of CSMT station is amongst the government’s flagship projects that will amplify the heritage element of the station and boost tourism prospects.

One of the main objectives of this upgrade is to provide commuters with a world-class travel experience.

The scope of work includes undertaking civil works for the station buildings and associated infrastructure which primarily consists of an iconic façade, ultra-modern station buildings, refurbishment of heritage buildings, separate platform for suburban and long distance trains, and connection through skywalk from Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai (earlier known as Crawford Market).

The re-developed CSMT station will have a spacious roof plaza with all passenger amenities at one place along with spaces for retail, cafeterias and recreational facilities.

Facilities like food court, waiting lounge, place for local products, etc. will be available.

To make the station navigable, adequate illumination, wayfinding/signages, acoustics, and lifts/escalators/travellators shall be provided. Master plan has been prepared for smooth movement of traffic, with adequate parking facilities.

There will be integration with other modes of transportation like metro and bus. Both sides of the city will be connected through the station, with the station building on both sides of the rail tracks.

The station will be developed as a green building with solar energy, water conservation/recycling, solid waste management and improved tree cover.

Special care will be taken to provide Divyangjan friendly facilities. The station will be developed on the concept of intelligent building.

There will be segregation of arrival/departures, clutter free platforms, improved surfaces and fully covered platforms. The station will be safety-assured with installation of CCTV cameras and access control.
