The Indian Railways has announced new guidelines and approvals that will allow a full 12-coach walkthrough design for the air-conditioned (AC) local trains to be built for Mumbai in the future.
The trains will feature a vestibuled layout with underslung electrical equipment, allowing them to carry more passengers than regular AC trains. A test train is currently located at the Mumbai Central station.
The new local trains will be equipped with a fire detection system and automatic smoke and fire detection alarms.
In addition, the motorman/guard will have entry and exit provisions from the passenger area to improve accessibility.
The railway board has asked the manufacturer to consult an interior design expert to improve the aesthetic of future trains, including the decor, exterior appearance, colour scheme, and driver's cab. It comes as part of an effort to improve the overall look of the trains.
The Indian Railways is working on a long-term plan to convert the entire fleet of Mumbai local trains into air-conditioned trains.
The 238 Mumbai-customized AC local trains, 47 of which are under MUTP-3 and 191 under MUTP-3A, will feature inbuilt infotainment and CCTV systems, as well as improved acceleration.
The trains are currently in the process of receiving approvals.

Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
