The Karnataka Cabinet on Thursday (18 September) approved the construction of a greenfield airport in Vijayapura with an estimated cost of Rs 618.75 crore, Indian Express reported.
Karnataka Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil stated that the initial estimate of Rs 347.92 crore was revised with an additional Rs 270.83 crore sanctioned by the State Cabinet.
The increased allocation will provide upgraded infrastructure to accommodate larger aircraft at the facility.
The Cabinet also deliberated on environmental issues connected with the project.
On local body elections, Patil clarified that no ordinance would be issued for ballot paper use since current laws already permit it.
“There is no need for ordinance as there is a provision (to use ballot papers for polls) in the existing laws,” he was quoted as saying by IE.
The decision was reportedly made after consulting legal experts and the State Election Commission (SEC) over the issue.
According to the sources cited in the IE report, the SEC advised against an ordinance, noting it already has authority to conduct polls with ballot papers.
The Cabinet also approved three Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) plants at a combined cost of Rs 74.88 crore.
Each plant, worth Rs 24.96 crore, will be set up at Agricultural Produce Marketing Committees in Dasanapura (Bengaluru), Kolar, and Mysuru.
These plants will operate under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, with generation capacity of 50 tonnes of CNG per day.
