India will match leading global powers like US and China to install next generation (5G) technology, artificial technology (AI) and unmanned vehicles across the three wings of its armed forces.

Adoption of 5G technology and AI is set to comprehensively advance Indian defence capabilities in order to anticipate the opposition’s moves.

“Armed forces also will need to migrate to 5G network considering the use of unmanned vehicles and AI in future. The ministry will take necessary steps to take forward 5G connectivity with relevant use cases,” Ministry of Defence secretary Ajay Kumar was quoted by the Economic Times.

The US Department of Defence had revealed in October last year that it would spend $600 million for experiments on 5G and for testing purposes at certain military sites.

This followed China’s heavy investment in AI, under-sea cables along with quantum computing to instill 5G in numerous defence applications.
