The latest ‘Building brand India through film tourism’ report reveals that India’s film tourism industry has the potential to attract a million film tourists into India by 2022, the Television Post reports. This would result in revenue for the industry of up to three billion dollars,

The Ernst & Young (EY) and the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry study was launched at the third edition of the Global Film Tourism Conclave. It suggests the industry with various avenues for partnerships and policy initiatives that it can undertake to make movies an effective medium for investment and enabling destination tourism in India.

The report also finds that deficient infrastructure in roads, inland water transport as well as air connectivity are the biggest boulders for the industry, It states that there is an immediate need of investment in such necessary infrastructure to support film tourism.

One of the fastest growing sectors in India, the film tourism industry has grown by 28 per cent to Rs 15,600 crore in 2017 from Rs 12,200 crore in 2016. Further, India is among the world’s largest producers of cinematographic films, and the industry’s projected size growth is estimated to touch Rs 20,400 crore by 2019.

The film tourism industry in India offers many direct benefits like revenue and employment generation and transfer of technology in production. Further, there are other induced advantages of the tourism industry like awareness and the creation of attractions as well as the shaping of attractions.

The report suggests various processes like simplifying administration, giving incentives for production of films in locations as well as state governments promoting filming destinations to transform film locations in the country into tourism destinations.
