US President Joe Biden on Sunday (28 March) called the military violence in Myanmar "absolutely outrageous" and said Washington was working on reacting with sanctions.
The situation in Myanmar, which has seen almost daily protests since a military coup in February, was "terrible," Biden said in comments reported by journalists travelling with the US President on his return from Delaware to Washington, DPA news agency reported.
Asked whether the US would respond with sanctions, Biden said "we're working on that now." The bloodiest day of violence so far on Saturday - which marked Armed Forces Day in Myanmar - reportedly left 114 people dead.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell too condemned the Myanmar security forces’ response to the Saturday protests.
"I am following the worrying events in Myanmar. The escalation of violence with more than 100 civilian killings perpetrated by the military against its own people on its ‘Armed Forces Day’ is unacceptable. Far from celebrating, the Myanmar military has made yesterday a day of horror and of shame," Borrell reportedly said in a statement on Sunday.
"We will continue to use the EU’s mechanisms, including sanctions, to target the perpetrators of this violence, and those responsible for turning back the clock on Myanmar’s path of democracy and peace," Borrell added.

The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
