After having renamed Mughalsarai station, the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh (UP) has sent proposals to rename the Agra, Bareilly and Kanpur airports to the Centre, Amar Ujala has reported.

The three, currently Defence airports, are to be converted into civilian airports as part of the regional connectivity scheme of the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

As part of the proposal, the Bareilly airport will be known as ‘Nath Nagri’ airport, with Nath Nagri reportedly considered as the old name for the city. Seven big Shiva temples dot the city giving it the name.

The Agra airport is to be named after BJP ideologue Deen Dayal Upadhyay, while the Kanpur’s Chakeri airport is proposed to be renamed after Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi, the report says.

The Yogi Adityanath government has taken to renaming several cities and important infrastructure in the state. The Mughalsarai station was earlier renamed as the Deen Dayal Updhayay Junction, leading to a controversy. The state government is also moving to rename Allahabad as Prayagraj before the Kumbh Mela to be held in the city in 2019.
