The Railways department is going to launch its first air-conditioned local train in Delhi. The mainline electric multiple unit (MEMU) train has eight stainless-steel coaches that will run between Delhi and cities in Uttar Pradesh within 200-300 km from Delhi, reports Mint.

The new train can reach speeds of 130 kmph against 100 kmph in the previous train. Costing Rs 26 crore, it can carry 2,618 passengers compared to 2,402 passengers in the current trains.

The trains will be featured with GPS information system, automated doors, CCTV surveillance systems and cushioned seats. Also, all the coaches will have two toilets each. The first local train will be sent for trials from the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) on Wednesday, said ICF General Manager Sudhanshu Mani.

“We have requested Railway Board to allot this rake to Northern Railway... This rake will be based in Delhi and will run from there to other cities,” added Mani. The new generation MEMU trains are comparable to the advanced Train 18, said the general manager.

The trials will be conducted and completed in less than two months and will commence operation from February. The ICF will ship the second air-conditioned 12 coach local train for the Mumbai suburban railways on 31 December.
