The central government is set to make having an airbag on the passenger side of the front seat mandatory for all cars, Times of India reports.

Even economy cars will have to comply with this regulation as the top committee dealing with vehicle standards has approved this proposal.

Now, the government has also rolled out a draft notification through which the automotive industry standard concerning with safety features will be tweaked. It will take almost a year for the rule to be implemented as the road transport ministry is working towards finalising the time-frame.

“There is a consensus across the globe that vehicles should have maximum features to protect the occupants in case of a crash. We have also made it clear that there won’t be any compromise on safety features irrespective of cost,” an official from the government was quoted in the report.

Another change put forth in the AIS is to do away with child-lock systems in commercial-use four-wheelers. “It was felt that we should do away with the provision of child lock rather than leaving it to the wish of drivers to disable them. This can be done at dealer’s end,” a source revealed. As of now, the drivers have to disable the child lock system for the safety of the passengers.
