The police administration in Moscow yesterday (17 January) detained Alexei Navalny, the prominent political rival of President Vladimir Putin, after he arrived back into the country following treatment in Germany, reports Times of India.
Navalny had flown to Germany months ago after he was poisoned last summer. As per the German military's testing, he had been poisoned with the Novichok nerve agent. However, the assertion has been refuted by the establishment in Kremlin.
Meanwhile, Navalny has asserted that President Putin was behind his poisoning and says that the Kremlin is afraid of him.
The 44-years-old Navalny's detainment upon his return to Russia comes after Moscow's prison service called FSIN had said last week that it would do everything to arrest him upon his return for flouting the terms of a suspended prison sentence for embezzlement under a 2014 case which Navalny says he was trumped into.
Navalny's suspended sentence in the case could likely be turned into incarceration for as much as 3.5 years. The same, as per FSIN, will be determined by a court later this month.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
