The modern coach factory situated in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh has planned to double its manufacturing capacity from current 1000 rail coaches to 2000 coaches at an investment of Rs 480 crores, Financial Express has reported.
The plan is awaiting approval from the Railway Board and would be implemented by 2020-21 if things go as per schedule.
“As of now, we do not have sufficient coaches for our spare rakes for existing trains for running new trains. Once this goes through more coaches will be available to us and we will be able to replace the old coaches with the new ones,” Former MCF Chairman Rajesh Agarwal explained the need for expansion to PTI.
The MCF has increased its production in exponentially to 368 coaches in first four months of 2018. This is equal to the number of coaches manufactured in the first four months of the past four years (16 months in total). In 2017-18, the unit manufactured 711 coaches. The production ramp-up in MCF will aid Indian Railways’ plan to introduce smart coaches in its trains.
