Kerala police have filed a case against a bishop of the Missionaries of Jesus, which falls under the Roman Catholic Diocese of Jalandhar, Punjab, on charges of raping a nun and having unnatural sex with her.
The alleged crime took place at a convent near Kuruvilangad police limits in Kottayam district between 2014 and 2016. The nun has been subject to medical tests and her statement was recorded 30 June. She has now come forward to record the statement before a magistrate under Section 164 Criminal Procedure Code which is likely Monday (2 June), reported Times of India.
The incident came to light after the bishop filed a complaint with the police against nun and five others, charging her with threatening him on 21 June. The nun told the media on Saturday that she will speak up when the “time comes”.
This is the latest in a slew of complaints against the church in Kerala. Last week, a woman complained that she was raped by five priests of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church and they had resorted to blackmailing her to oblige them.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
