In a latest development, the Arvind Kejriwal-led Delhi government has ordered the transport department for withdrawal of 576 DTC buses put at the disposal of Delhi Police on ‘special hire’, reports India TV.
It has also asked the DTC to seek approval before allowing any of its buses to be taken on ‘special hire’ by the Delhi Police or any other entity for that matter.
Notably, the Delhi Transport Corporation's (DTC) buses have been the main mode of travel for Delhi Police and other security forces to the three entry points at Singhu, Tikri and Ghazipur borders ever since farmers rallied there on 26 November last year.
The Delhi Police has been hiring state-run buses for a long time and the latest order might affect the security cover at and near the farmers' protest locations.
A DTC official had earlier told IANS that 45 buses were damaged by protesters on January 26, following which the department had expressed its displeasure known as the national capital was already facing a shortage of public transport buses.
"The costs of repairing damaged buses is an issue with the Transport Department and that may be the reason the DTC has decided to get its buses back from Delhi Police," the sources said.
However, BJP leader Kapil Mishra has slammed the latest move by the AAP government and stated that the move was unjust for the personnel of the Delhi Police and CRPF who protect the national capital.
