In a bid to push the development of a common EV charging infrastructure in India, homegrown electric vehicles maker Ather Energy on Tuesday (10 August) announced that it has opened the firms's fast charging connector patents to other industry players.

Further, the EV maker also announced that it would will also help the firms with engineering integration and support for the industry at no cost.

The development was announced by Ather's co-founder and CEO Tarun Mehta on Tuesday.

"Today we are opening up the charging connector patents at Ather Energy. Any OEM can use them in their vehicles and chargers for free Ather will also help with engg integration and support for the industry, at no cost Killing proprietary standards - may a million chargers bloom!" Mehta said in a tweet.

In a statement, the company said, "At Ather, We’ve always believed the future of mobility to be fast charging Which is why we’re opening our proprietary fast charging connector for other OEMS to use".

Currently, Indian electric 2-wheeler makers including Hero Electric, Bajan Auto, Ather and TVS Motors all use different charging pins as there is no common standard for electric chargers in the country. Thus, a charger of one make cannot be used to charge a vehicle of another company.

However, if the EV makers take up Ather's offer, their consumers can also charge their e-scooters at the Bengaluru based company's over 170 public chargers across India.
