The Vishwa Hindu Parishad in a statement issued today (27 October) strongly condemned the alleged police brutality in the Munger incident and demanded that action be taken against the guilty cops and administration officials.
In the press statement, the VHP calls the police action on Durga devotees as an "unprovoked, unnecessary and barbaric lathi charge on peaceful and unarmed devotees going for the immersion of Durga idols".
The VHP has thus demanded that the guilty police and administrative officers be immediately suspended and an enquiry be initiated against them.
It adds that those found guilty should be prosecuted under section 302 (murder) of the IPC in a fast track court and punished.
It has been reported that the violence erupted during a Durga immersion procession after cops allegedly thrashed four individuals who were carrying idols.
Eyewitnesses have also claimed that the cops opened fire and a 18-year-old devotee died after being shot in the head. An alleged viral video of the incident shows cops mercilessly lathi-charging devotees.
The cops meanwhile have claimed that 'anti-social elements' resorted to stone pelting and "someone from the crowd opened fire.
