Despite Bengaluru standing out when compared to other states in terms of technology and infrastructure, the city is placed second concerning atrocities committed against Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/STs), reports DH.
According to a report on the Implementation of Prevention of Atrocities Act for the year 2017, Bengaluru comes second after Bagalkot, regarding the rising number of atrocities committed against SC/STs and as many as 218 cases of crimes which include rape and murder have been registered in Bengaluru Urban District in 2017.
The detailed report on atrocities on SC/STs in Karnataka was prepared by a Committee for Monitoring and Strengthening SCs/STs in Karnataka (CMASK) and Karnataka Dalita Mahila Vedike (KDMV). The report will be submitted to the state government to seek its intervention in containing and preventing them.
Bengaluru has been either on top of the list concerning atrocities or has come second for the past six years. Areas like Kumbalgodu, Channasandra, Srinivasapur, Kanakpura and Beechanahalli have reported the most atrocities. The report also states that over 17 rape cases have been reported in Bengaluru in 2017, which is the highest compared to other districts.
“Women in SC/ST communities are exploited in many ways — physically, mentally and sexually even in today’s society. In this era of #MeToo, it is our duty to become the voice of innocent Dalit women who are least cared for by the government and judicial bodies,” said Yashodha P, state convener, CMASK and KDMV.
As many as 2,140 atrocity cases have been reported in 2017, which is an 11.92 per cent increase when compared to the previous year’s 1,912 cases reported.
The report will be submitted to all deputy commissioners for quarterly reviews and publicity.
