A BJP Corporator from Mangaluru earned high praise from various social media users after a picture of him entering a manhole to clean a rainwater drain went viral.
As per a report by News18, the corporator from Kadri South, Manohar Shetty, had summoned labourers to clear a clogged rainwater drain. This clogging had resulted in water overflowing on the roads causing inconvenience to pedestrians and motorists.
The labourers though refused to do the job citing the risks of entering a manhole during monsoon. The corporator later commissioned a high-speed water jet to clear the drain but that attempt was also unsuccessful.
"The situation was getting bad. No one was ready to enter. Then, I decided to enter the manhole and clean the clogged pipe", the corporator was quoted as saying.
He subsequently entered the manhole with four others and cleaned the drain for half a day.
"We are elected representatives. If we can do something quickly, we must do that...We can’t force poor people to enter a manhole to clean the pipes for us. If something goes wrong, who will take responsibility? Which is why I decided to do the job myself", he added.
He said that he will willingly do the task again if required. This is his first stint as a corporator.
