The Government of Maharashtra informed the legislative council that a decision to provide scholarships to students from the open category will soon be initiated. The scholarships will be granted to students who wish to pursue higher education abroad.
Dilip Kamble, Minister for Social Justice (Maharashtra), said that the family income limit for students to be eligible for the scholarships was capped at Rs 20 lakh per annum.
India Today quoted Kamble as saying, “The government is positive about enhancing the aggregate family income limit for backward class students on similar lines and a decision in this regard will be taken soon.”
The scheme will be awarded through the departments concerned, he added.
He further said, “Even as the income limit for the students from Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe category is Rs 6 lakh and for the other backward category Rs 8 lakh, the rules specifying criteria, terms and conditions and number of students to be selected are stipulated by the concerned department,” India Today reported.
