Presenting her second Union Budget before the nation, Union Finance Minister (FM) Nirmala Sitharaman announced an allocation of Rs 22,000 crore for the power and renewable energy sector for the financial year 2020-21.

FM Sitharaman also pushed on the States and Union Territories (UTs) to ensure that all the conventional electricity meters are replaced with pre-paid smart meters in a timeframe of three years.

This, as per FM Sitharaman, will provide the consumers with freedom to choose the supplier and rate as per the requirements. She also apprised the Lok Sabha that the Government will be taking up steps to provide relief to the power distribution companies (DISCOMs).
