  • In Budget 2019, Piyush Goyal has announced that the government has released funds to the tune of Rs 35,000 crores to Army personnel as part of the One Rank One Pension (OROP) scheme.
  • Our soldiers are our pride and honour, he said, adding that the OROP decision pending for last 40 years, has been implemented by current NDA-led government.
  • The proposal to implement the OROP scheme for army veterans, that had been stuck for four decades, was approved by the NDA government in July 2018. He added that Defence budget is enhanced beyond Rs 3 lakh crore and a substantial hike in military service pay has been announced.
  • “In simple terms, OROP implies that uniform pension be paid to the Armed Forces personnel retiring in the same rank with the same length of service, regardless of their date of retirement. Future enhancements in the rates of pension would be automatically passed on to the past pensioners. This implies bridging the gap between the rate of pension of current and past pensioners at periodic intervals,” former Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar had noted while making the announcement.
