A parliamentary committee in Canada is urging the Canada Border Services Agency to halt the pending deportation of international students, referring to some 700 students from Punjab, who were victims of fraudulent practices by an immigration agent.
The committee is also requesting that an alternative pathway to permanent status be provided for those impacted, such as the ‘Humanitarian and Compassionate application process’ or a broad regularisation programme.
While the committee does not hold the power to halt the deportations, Canada’s Prime Minister and its immigration minister are also working to find a solution.
Government sources have confirmed that several Indian students currently facing deportation on charges of obtaining visas using false admission letters have been granted "stay orders" by Canadian authorities.
This development has been greatly welcomed by the concerned parties and has given hope to those who were at risk of being sent back to India.
Sources close to the issue have mentioned that the majority of these students travelled to Canada between 2017 and 2019.
Many of them successfully completed their studies, while others were granted work permits that allowed them to stay in Canada.
However, some of them were unable to avoid getting caught up in the fraudulent activity that now has them facing the threat of deportation.
